The 6th SS Panzer Division "Götz von Berlichingen" was a German armoured division during World War II. It was formed in 1943 and was composed of approximately 20,000 Waffen-SS soldiers.
The division was initially stationed on the Eastern Front, but later fought in France and Belgium during the Normandy campaign. It was involved in the Battle of Falaise Pocket and the Battle of Arnhem, among other major battles.
The division was named after the legendary knight Götz von Berlichingen, who had a noted reputation for chivalry and daring. The division's insignia featured his emblem, a hand holding an iron glove. This symbolized von Berlichingen's famous quote "er kann mich am Arsch lecken" which translates to "he can lick my ass", which he was known for saying when he was asked to surrender.
The 6th SS Panzer Division faced allegations of war crimes, specifically the massacre of 86 civilians in the French village of Tulle in 1944. Several members of the division were later tried and convicted of war crimes by French courts.
The division was disbanded after the end of World War II, and some of its former members were subsequently prosecuted for war crimes.
